These are some recipes passed down from generation to generation here at the Art of Cakes. They're delicious!

[German Chocolate]

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 ounces sweet baking chocolate, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions: Preheated oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 8-inch square baking pans. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, butter, sour cream, eggs, chocolate, milk, and vanilla. Beat with mixer at low speed until blended. Increase mixer to high and beat 2 minutes longer. Spoon batter into prepared pans. Bake about 35 minutes.

[Red Velvet]

  • Vegetable oil for the pans
  • 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Flour 3 cake pans. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.Then mix in the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla. Divide the cake batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Place the pans in the oven evenly spaced apart. Bake about 30 minutes.
